This show had less planning time than I would have liked, as our group had been working on Midnight in Manhattan the week before. Despite this, I was able to set up my show files on QLab and the QL5 before Christmas, which gave me plenty of time to prepare everything in advance. Sound isn’t one of my strongest areas, but this project helped me gain a much stronger understanding of general sound concepts, including patching and routing, user interfaces, and the theory behind effects, compressors, and EQ. For this show, I wanted to explore the idea of surround sound, as I felt it suited the performance well. I had two speakers rigged behind the audience, two on each side, and the main PA. I understand that a truly immersive surround setup would require more equipment, but I worked within the hardware available. I also used four channels of Sennheiser EW-D alongside various compressors and effects to create distinct sounds for each character. Overall, I feel much more confident with sound now, and this experience has really helped consolidate my learning.
