House Gospel Choir were a great group to work with following Letz Zep. The show provided a really nice contrast in style and gave me much more creative freedom with the lighting. For this gig I was working alongside another lighting technician, so I only operated for one of the support acts and the second half of the main show. Even with the shared role, I was still able to create a range of interesting lighting states and contribute to the overall look of the performance.
For this event we had four new wash moving lights, which we decided to position on the floor to add more depth and visual interest to the stage. We experimented with a few different placements during setup and eventually settled on having all four along the front of the stage, as the final stage layout ended up being different from what was originally planned.
One challenge during this show was that the other lighting technician had already patched the new fixtures into his show file, which was organised very differently to mine. Because we needed to swap control during the show, I had to operate using his file layout rather than my own. This was difficult at times, as his operating style and file structure were quite different from what I’m used to, and it took some adjustment to work comfortably.
Despite this, I was still able to produce good effects and adapt my operating style to suit the situation. It was a useful experience in learning to work with different show files and approaches, and it helped me become more flexible when operating under less familiar conditions.
