This show was my first paid gig at the Subs, so I ended up doing a few different jobs than usual. I arrived at 1 pm, just before the van pulled in, and we started unloading a mix of kit, everything from Christmas trees and school tables to LED moving heads and cable trunks. Definitely an unusual load.

The production brought two touring technicians, one for sound and one for lighting, each with their own systems. Since I’m aiming to get into lighting, I was able to work quite a bit with the lighting designer. I helped unload flight cases, attach clamps, run cable lines between fixtures and to the desk, and assist with patching.

He was using 16 Robe LEDBeam 150s, six rigged on the mid over-stage bar and eight placed on the floor upstage. He had pre-loomed cables, which made it straightforward to lay out the fixtures, run a single main cable along the back, and then plug everything in.

I didn’t see much of the performance since I was only being paid for the get-in and get-out, but I did arrive a little early for the load-out and managed to catch a bit of the show. It was interesting, and definitely not the type of event I would’ve expected at the venue, but it was great experience and good exposure to another side of the industry.
